Munchkin

"Go down in the dungeon. Kill everything you meet. Backstab your friends and steal their stuff. Grab the treasure and run."

I have only started playing this game for a few months now  and  it has been a lot of fun. So i looked into the game further and found that the expansions are really quite cheap. so i bought up a few to add to the main set.
I prefer the larger games of six players over the smaller games and more cards get played and sorts of crazy antics arise. Even being a lower level while others are higher doesn't mean you are out of the race at all.

The game mechanic is a simple but effective one, beat the monsters score to win. sounds easy but you have to consider the other players, they may decide to boost the monster to a higher level with an upgrade card and you might have to ask for aid forgoing some of your treasure.

Munchkin 4 – The Need for Steed is a larger expansion. This set introduces Steeds,  including not just the Dragon and the Tiger, but the Giant Mutant Gerbil the Chicken The set also has lots and lots of new Hirelings. They are valuable characters to add to your retinue, use their special abilities, and sacrifice them to save your own skin. The card in the set called MBA in management allows you to have two hirelings at one time. These have made a fair appearance in the games with a lot more monsters to fight against

Booster Packs I have included to my set.

I couldn't have played munchkin with out adding the Conan set. Based on the new movie. These cards let you upgrade your character with great items like the Mask of Acheron or the Barbarian Booties, Sword of Corin or the Stygian Talons.  New monsters like the Sand Warriors, the Dweller and Khalar Zym himself make munchkin life a little bit more dangerous.

Race modifiers Dark and High gives a nice twist to the game, encouraging players to either help or become a hindrance to other players to gain levels. The class modifier Master helps to gain extra treasures, and of course the Reloaded Die the help players get out of sticky situations.

Meet the Sparkly Good Fairy. She wants all the munchkins to play nice, and she's willing to bash heads to make sure they do. Play her way, and she'll bribe you with Fairy Dust. Otherwise, you might end up fighting her instead. And if you don't take her out, she'll be back again and again . . .
The set introduces the Sparkly Good Fairy and her deck of Fairy Dust cards. These extra rewards are for players who are willing to help each other. This small deck makes a big difference to the games as each players wants a fairy dust reward. Some rewards giving extra hands to carry items or stops players interfering in crucial combats.

Of all of the small booster expansion this one has had the biggest impact on the games we have played, as it has become a great bargaining tool for helping other players.

One of the five Seasonal boosters bringing new Santa monsters like Teeny Tiny Tim, Recalled Toys, and Mrs. Claus. You know what you have to do. Armor yourself in Tinsel, and grab the Snow Shoes and the Reindeer Hat. This set has been so much fun that i will leave them in the set all year round. One of my Favourite items is the Festivus pole.
The guild is the hot web series about a gaming group,  Munchkin The Guild! Add's Codex, Vork, Clara, Bladezzz, Tink, and the mighty Zaboo to the adventures. Watch The Guild here. Some great cards in this set such as Elected guild leader.

This was the last booster pack that i bought. i thought it was need as there was lots of equipment to upgrade players and not much to enhance the monsters. Some of the upgrade cards recycle themselves if the attached
monsters aren't defeated.

A Selection of awesome new dragons to add to the Dungeons.  Dragons are fearsome! Dragons are cool! Dragons have LOTS of treasure for munchkins to loot!

November update 2012

November Update

Quite a few things on the plate this month.
so First up is....

Rasputina's  35SS crew:

Rasputina
Ice golem

3 x Ice Gamins
3 x Molemen

December acolyte

The Crew is now fully painted along with some ice pillars. The one game i have used them against the Ortegas i found Rasputina and her crew to be quite slow movement-wise. The Molemen are quite endurable and good for reaching objective while burrowing. The next game i am looking forward to getting to use the December acolyte.

Outcast 35SS crew
Viktorias
Bishop
Taelor
Sue
Ronin
Convict gunslinger

This was my original crew i worked out , it wasn't until after i had bought Sue that i found out about his Man in black rule which means he can't be in a crew with someone with either the Ruthless or Wicked abilities. which means my Convict gunslinger and Sue can't be in the same force.

As a replacement i am thinking either an additional Ronin with two spare soulstones or an Orain.

This months sees me playing a lot of new card games, the first one being Warhammer invasion. As a long time player of all things Games-workshop this game clearly got my attention. So i took the plunge and bought the core set and two of the deluxe expansions ( Assault on Ulthuan and March of the Damned) and a battle pack (The fall of Karak Grimaz).

This gives me the option to play with eight of the races from Warhammer. They are separated into two categories.  Forces of Order and the Forces of Destruction

Forces of Order:

High Elves
Empire
Dwarves
Lizardmen (Neutral faction)

Forces of Destruction:

Dark Elves
Chaos
Orcs
Vampire counts (Neutral faction)

Each faction have a distinct way of playing that keeps well with Warhammer lore. So far in the games i have played i have really enjoyed the games and I'm sure it has potential to be played multi-player.

The other card game that i have started to play with other people in the same level of playing experience is Magic the gathering. I have always had some cards i had picked up in eighth edition but no-one i knew really played it on a regular basis so i kinda stopped playing. But with the opening of the new Dundee gaming store Major Arcana in October, Magic the Gathering (Mtg) has taken off in a big way.

The Current set we are playing with is as the title says Return to Ravnica.  It focuses on the guild system and multi-colour cards.

The returning guilds will be featured in the Return to Ravnica block, with five guilds — the Azorius Senate (blue /white), Golgari Swarm (Green/black), Izzet League (blue/red), Cult of Rakdos (red/black), and Selesnya Conclave (green/white)
Ravnica, a plane comprising a singular megalopolis in which a vast and diverse variety of inhabitants co-exist.
The Guild i have chosen to play in Standard is a Selesnya View my tapped out deck here  and in the last booster draft i played using a Rakdos deck.

Major Arcana is a new Gaming store in Dundee city centre,

Available at Major Arcana:
- Graphic novels and manga.

- Games:
loads of Board games, (Horus heresy, Settlers of Catan)
Card games (Magic the gathering, Pokemon)
Role playing games (Savage worlds, Dark heresy)
Tabletop war games (Urban war, Malifaux, Hordes and Warmachine)
- T-Shirts and Artwork

All this in an environment that is friendly, bright, and clean! Round it out with some sofas and coffee tables, so you can sit and read, or play some games with your pals.

Warhammer fantasy battle - Skaven

Warhammer fantasy battle - Skaven

In keeping with my gaming hopes for 2012 i have managed to complete my 2000 point skaven army.

The Generals force is led by a Vermin lord (Game wise he isn’t, but for the story purposes he is) known as Warpfang the Cruel, a vile Daemon seeking to have complete dominion over the old world with his hordes of evil ratmen. although the mightiest, the Verminlord has little time to motivate troops and bribe others, the verminlord is too mercurial for that, instead the generalship falls to the Plague priest Skrit Rottenfang.

Warhammer - Blood in the Badlands

 Blood in the Badlands

I haven’t played a lot of eight edition of Warhammer fantasy battle (three games). So what better than to play in a campaign to get motivation.
I will be using my skaven force as it is the only warhammer fantasy army i have anywhere near completion
.

Army selection
The campaign has each faction starting with three armies, two of 2000 points and the generals’ army of 2400 points.

Mighty empires army markers
Red is Ikit claws force and the Green is Lord Skrolks force

Mighty empires army marker for the generals
force with the Verminlord Warpfang the Cruel

The Three Forces.
The Generals force is led by a Vermin lord (Game wise he isn’t, but for the story purposes he is) known as Warpfang the Cruel, a vile Daemon seeking to have complete dominion over the badlands with his hordes of evil ratmen. although the mightiest, the vermin lord has little time to motivate troops and bribe others, the verminlord is too mercurial for that, instead it is up to the Chieftain Skarfur Snaptail to mediate the two rival factions of clan Skyre and clan Pestilens.

Verminlords force:
General: Chieftain Skarfur Snaptail
Verminlord : Warpfang the Cruel
Warlock engineer: Splinter Flashbang
Plague priest : Skrit Rottenfang
Skyre clanrats: The Blighted
Pestilens clanrats : Poxbitten
Skavenslaves: The Lashed
Rat swarms: The Pure
Plague monks: Rottenfangs
Plague censer bearers: Plague bringers
Warplock Jezzails
Doomwheel:
Warp lightning cannon

The two lieutenants
The armies are two parts a Skyre and a Pestilens part.  So as the armies are similar, I picked Special characters to lead them, lord Skorlk to lead the Pestilens force and Ikit Claw the other with its Skyre theme.

Skyre force:
General: Ikit Claw
Warlock engineer :Reek Underwarp
Plague priest Nurglitz the Bilious
Chieftain :Skitterquik
Skyre clanrats :Skyre's favoured
Pestilens clanrats :Clan Toksic
Skavenslaves :The Ruined Clans
Rat swarms: The Tide
Plague monks: Cult of Contagion
Plague censer bearers: Disciples of Filth
Warplock Jezzails: Headhunters
Doomwheel
Warp lightning cannon

Pestilens force:
General: Lord Skrolk
Warlock engineer:Gritt Clawmaim
Plague priest :Morskab Festerburn
Chieftain : Varis Blisterrot
Skyre clanrats : Warptainted
Pestilens clanrats : Doombites
Skavenslaves : Cursed Litter
Rat swarms: the Carriers
Plague monks : Putrid Brood
Plague censer bearers: Putrid Brothers
Warplock Jezzails
Doomwheel
Warp lightning cannon

My forces are almost ready to cry havoc and let loose the Rats of war!

Lord of the rings SBG revisited

Lord of the rings SBG revisited

“The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.”

Games workshop released the new set of army books completely replacing the current army books and the legions of middle earth book.

The five books are :
  • The kingdoms of men,
  • The free peoples,
  • Mordor,
  • The fallen realms
  •  Moria and Agmar

Each of the five books contain all of the six new basic points battle matches. and some additional themed scenarios that recreate battles from middle earth's history.

As far as rules are concerned nothing has really changed, but the main difference is how forces are created.

The warbands as they are now called consists of a hero and up to twelve warriors from their faction. The bow limit restriction still exists. Some heroes aren't allowed a warband. They are called independent heroes. Examples of this are large creatures or low pointed heroes eg:Shelob, Bill the pony.
Apart from that there aren’t any other major restrictions to force selection.

What these five books are really useful are, is that they have compiled all of the characters made over the years from either white dwarf or/and war of the ring including some new ones too, this is great at giving you options as the game is getting more hero focused due to the changes in force selection. Some heroes also give options to upgrade troops for an advantage. This helps to give force a more themed feel. As an example, if Gil-galad is included in the army then you can upgrade any number of high elf warriors to "Kings Guard" giving them bonus to fight value.

In conjunction with the new books, I have made the decision to finish off my high elf army.
350pts army consists of :

High elves

Warband 1 - Kings Guard

Gil-galad
6  Elves, Kings Guard, h/armour, elf blade

Warband 2 -Captains retinue

Elf Captain, h/armour, shield
4 Elves , h/armour, elf bows
2 Elves,  h/armour, elf blade

March Update

March Update

Here is a number of things i have been doing this month.

In conjunction with the release of the new army books, I have made the decision to finish off my high elf army.

350pts army consists of:

Warband 1:
Gil-galad
6 Kings guard Elves with elf blades
Warband 2:
Elf Captain, shield
4 Elves, elf bows
2 Elves, elf blades

Gil-Galad's warband- Kings Guard

Captains warband
(yeah i know that is Celeborn in armour, but i like the miniature and its armed the same as a normal captain.)

More painting.  I painted up the space marines from the Black reach set in my favourite space marine chapter colours. The Ultramarines.
I really enjoyed painting these up and i do think that after i have read the new horus heresy novel by Dan Abnett "Know no fear" i will properly start my own Ultramarine army.

Skaven

In keeping with my gaming hopes for 2012 i took a look at my skaven and was surprised to find, i now only have twenty two miniatures left to paint to complete a two thousand point force.
All i have left is twenty Skaven slaves and two Plague censer bearers.

Here are a few more pictures

Warlock engineer

Grey Seer Ghan-Chan

The Grey seer isn't actually in my two thousand point list, but i very much like this miniature

For this event i have built up some terrain, pics below

Also Urban mammoth have released concept sketches of the new faction called the
 Neo-Iskandrians

More sketches here

Roleplaying
Avid readers of my blog will notice a high number of roleplaying posts in the form of Dark heresy and Deathwatch. I do plan to keep posting up as the campaign progresses.

I haven't done much for Malifaux this month,
except for Mali Minaj which you can find details here.

Battle reports

As promised i do plan to post up a battle report for both Malifaux and Warmaster (the ancient variety)
